am believing i gonna get grounded after my dad sees my beautiful report card. he wasn't shocked at the big fat capital F for my economics but screamed in horror over my F9 for chinese. then all the drama came. about me being chinese and getting an F for chinese simply is a straight disgrace to my ancestors and the entire chinese population in the whole. entire. world. then he started his constant reminder for me to read lian he zao bao. that all i did when he told me to was just merely look at the pictures.
so anyway. i should be ashamed of myself. i do not come from an english speaking family. i come from a so-called chinese school who had chinese cultural appreciation classes for its students. when i was in primary school, my dad had already decided i must be immersed in all sort of chinese cultures.
back in primary 3 when all of us will actually have an cca, the most popular one was cadet scouts. almost every single young boy in school dreams of being one. i signed up, too. but after i lost the form my dad immediately signed me up for chinese poetry appreciation society. it is on every saturday morning. which is very exciting for a primary 3 kid who never gets to wake up on a saturday morning for school. and i get to go school all by myself! then the society was some sort of like chinese-for-dummies-anonymous therapy session. an ultra pathetic group of small little kids like myself sit in a round circle reciting chinese poetry. it lasted for 2 hours. gawd.
so i quit after a year. and vowed i will never ever touch chinese poetry again. then my dad signed me up for chinese calligraphy club. which involved writing chinese characters in thick brushes. it was so much more exciting than the lame chinese poetry sessions. cos back then at the age of 10, to meet up every wednesday and friday to grind a black marble to get ink and start writing away in brushes is a highly adrenalin-pumping expierence.
and my house is full of chinese books. as in really full. my room, is a dungeon of them all. my dad is chinese educated and a lover of chinese culture. he suscribes to chinese culture magazines et al. and records chinese current affairs programs. i studied all my 10 over years in a school which had chinese culture lessons for all its students. and i watch that taiwanese show on monday nights. i watch holland v. i listen to jay chow. so why is my chinese F9? muahaha.
told my dad cos i'm in the arts stream and no one speaks chinese. well in sr, it's not that bad cos the arts people generally still speak some level of chinese. when i was in cj though. ha. no one seem to speak a single word of it except during chinese lessons! so i'm quite blessed to be here. if you think it this way. so i'm still wondering what's up with my deteriorating chinese. bah.
