sam mendes' american beauty is the best film i have ever watched. it's like the royal tenenbaums. it's about dysfunction of all sorts. beautifully shot and the plot revolves simultaneously. and each character says a story. the climax aside, this film speaks volume. it's extremely philosophical. about the beauty of life that no matter how complicated it seems, you can look a little closer, to finally realise it is there.
so who killed lester burnham? it's probably ricky fitts, who is so in love with beauty and lester's daughter jane. it may be angela. but then again. maybe not. it was supposed to be his wife carolyn (that was what i thought, really.) but it is actually ricky's dad frank fitts, who, you think is a homophobe, is in fact a homosexual who came out of the closet in the arms of lester, of course, it's a mistaken identity of some sort. in denial of his sexuality by sticking at the other side of the extreme, homicide became an arena to let them all out.
then there is angela, the typical popular high school girl who is really quite ordinary. despite being in denial of her greatest fear of nothing is scarier than being ordinary.
and the contrast between control and letting go between ricky's family and lester's. even within itself. ricky is the ultimate uncle sam's classic army style family. with structure and control in charge of their life. but of course, too much is really too much. it drives people insane. look at ricky's mum (played by allison janney who is seriously underutilized here. like in the hours.) and lester, who seems to be in a dilemma. having his life pretty much screwed up yet trying to amend it. oh well, he didn't survive to see he is amending it.
but the pretty cliche part about seeing your entire life played out in front of you a second before you die is what i really like. it is melodramatic the way it is shot. and in a way, if you think about it. you could be a second away from dying. it's just that you are living it all over again. that seems like forever.
good show. ooh. dark room today sucks big time. something must be wrong the way i develop the pictures. got so fed up mr wong offered to develop it for me. and anyway i think i may have flunk econs essay yet again. mrs ting walked pass my table in the hall today and literally begged me to try my best for the mcq.
